Barbara Sher – grandmother of coaching

Now and again I run across something Barbara Sher wrote or did. She’s the originator of the Success Team, one of many marvellous small-group move-your-life-forward formats. I ran onto this today:

Genius Press is dedicated to showing you how to do what you love — everything you love — while continuing to pay your rent and feed your dog. Like all Barbara’s work, it’s based on these principles:

1. You are fine as you are
You don’t have to change yourself to change your life. Self-improvement may not be possible. It certainly isn’t necessary. Use the time and energy to go after your dreams instead.

2. Isolation is the dreamkiller, not your attitude
No amount of positive thinking can replace information, encouragement and accountability. You need input and support from other people. They’ll tell you things you need to know, encourage and believe in you and keep you moving toward your dream.

3. You are a genius
You’re one of a kind. What you love is what you’re gifted at. Your talent is coded into your genes and filters everything that has happened in your unique history. You have original vision and that makes you a genius. The only way to feel satisfied is to listen to your own nature; in other words, to do what you were born to do.

4. It’s time to rediscover your dreams and put them back on that table
There are dozens of practical, realistic ways to make every dream possible and Genius Press is dedicated to showing them to you. Fresh ideas, stories of “ordinary” people who achieved their dreams, step-by-step instructions on how to achieve yours, alternative and unusual ways of earning an income (as well as new techniques for finding out what your dreams are!) are what you need to create a life you love.
